Rhinoplasty (Nose Surgery) Overview

Rhinoplasty is a procedure that recontours the nose to bring it into better proportion with the features of the face. It is most frequently performed in patients who desire to decrease or increase the size of the nose or nostrils, reshape the nasal bridge or tip, correct deformities due to genetics or injury, or correct problems that cause breathing difficulties. Rhinoplasty candidates must be at least 14 to 15 years old and have realistic expectations for their results. Our rhinoplasty surgeon serving the San Francisco Bay Area is a respected leader in the field, having developed many new nose surgery tools to help plastic surgeons the world over achieve successful results. If you are considering nose surgery, Dr. Ronald Gruber is an excellent choice to perform the procedure. Dr. Gruber's aim is to meet your aesthetic goals with results that appear natural, as though you never had any "work" done at all.

Rhinoplasty Procedure

Rhinoplasty is performed at our Oakland facility, convenient to San Francisco and surrounding areas. The procedure is typically offered on an outpatient basis and takes about three to four hours to complete under conscious sedation or general anesthesia. Dr. Gruber can perform rhinoplasty in one of two ways:

Open Rhinoplasty – this approach involves making a small incision along the strip of tissue separating the nostrils.

Closed Rhinoplasty – a closed rhinoplasty allows Dr. Gruber to make all of the incisions inside the nostrils.

Whether you undergo an open or closed rhinoplasty, the results leave little to no visible scarring, as the incisions are made in natural creases or hidden areas. Dr. Gruber will then separate the nasal cartilage and bone and recontour them to meet your goals. In order to protect the nose and retain the new shape, a light splint will be applied to the nasal area. The nose will not be packed.

Rhinoplasty Recovery

Patients who undergo rhinoplasty (nose surgery) typically go home the same day of the procedure. Patients should expect some swelling and minor discomfort after rhinoplasty; however, any pain can be alleviated with medication. The protective splint will be removed five to seven days after the nose surgery procedure. Patients are generally able to resume normal daily activities after about a week to ten days, although strenuous activity should be avoided and the nose protected from injury and excessive sun exposure for at least three weeks after the procedure. Most of the results from rhinoplasty can be seen soon after surgery; however, some of the finer details of the outcome may not be apparent for up to a year later.

Nasal Airway Obstruction

Rhinoplasty is primarily performed to enhance a person's facial features; however, it is also very useful for improving the functional qualities of the nose. Nose surgery can correct nasal airway blockages and make it easier for you to breath. A lifetime of minor to major nasal breathing problems may be alleviated with rhinoplasty. Also, nose surgery can be used to correct a deviated septum, as well as deformities caused by birth defects and injuries.

Secondary (Revision) Rhinoplasty

Dissatisfactory results from a rhinoplasty can often be corrected with secondary (revision) rhinoplasty. Dr. Ronald Gruber's extensive rhinoplasty experience makes him a good choice for addressing unsuccessful outcomes of previous surgeries performed by other plastic surgeons.

Ethnic Rhinoplasty

Individuals of certain ethnicities who are considering rhinoplasty can trust that Dr. Gruber has the skills necessary to custom-tailor the nose surgery procedure and achieve their goals without altering their ethnic characteristics. Ethnic rhinoplasty is designed to accomplish the same goals of conventional rhinoplasty, only with some extra considerations made so that the results look natural in accordance with the patient's ethnic heritage.
