Successful results with rhinoplasty are dependent not only on the superior skill of the plastic surgeon, but also largely on the instruments being used to perform the procedure. Our Marin County and San Francisco Bay Area nose surgery physician, also serving visitors from San Jose and the surrounding region, has developed or co-developed some of the most advanced tools in use today so that he and other can achieve outstanding rhinoplasty results. Nose Surgery Instruments

Over the years, our plastic surgeon serving Marin County and San Francisco Bay Area nose surgery patients has designed a number of rhinoplasty instruments for major companies, including Integra, Padgett, and Miltex. In order to avoid any conflict of interest, Dr. Gruber donates all royalties he receives from the sale of the instruments to the Plastic Surgery Education Foundation. These state-of-the-art tools can be used in a number of rhinoplasty procedures, including primary rhinoplasty, revision (secondary) rhinoplasty, and ethnic rhinoplasty. Here are a few of the instruments, in use by many plastic surgeons today, that Dr. Gruber has developed or co-developed:

Anatomic Retractor

The anatomic retractor is one of the most important tools Dr. Gruber has developed to improve rhinoplasty procedures. The retractor is a plastic model of a nasal framework, which the plastic surgeon can use as the basis for reshaping the patient's nose. The retractor also holds the nose open for the surgeon, thus serving two purposes. Please contact our nose surgery facility for more information on the results that you can expect to enjoy because of our advanced surgical devices.

Suction Elevator

When a doctor is operating on the nasal septum, the surgical field can often be obscured because of small amounts of blood that collect and make it difficult to see. Co-developed with Dr. Mark Gorney, the suction elevator makes it possible for the plastic surgeon to lift the tissues and suction away excess blood at the same time, giving him or her a clearer field of vision.

Sizers

During nose surgery, the plastic surgeon will often need to carve grafts of cartilage to reconstruct the tip of the nose. This difficult maneuver necessitates extreme precision and skill. Sizers make the process easier. The sizer can be inserted into the nose so that the surgeon can determine whether its shape has been adequately changed according to the procedure’s goals. If so, the sizer is placed on the cartilage and used rather like a cookie cutter to cut out the graft. This process makes the graft more predictable in size and shape, in addition to being quicker and more accurate. Dr. Gruber has also designed sizers for surgeons to use while grafting the dorsum of the nose.

In addition to the state-of-the-art instruments above, our nose surgery physician has designed a tool for enlarging the interior of the nose, making it possible to improve the shape of the airway. Similar to a speculum, this instrument allows the septal bone to be placed in a more central anatomical position. The instrument also moves the turbinate of the nose (which warms the air coming through) out of the way, opening up the airway to improve breathing.
