Ethnic Rhinoplasty in the San Francisco Bay Area

Though it is not always the case, individuals of some ethnicities tend to share distinctive nose shapes, each of which requires a specific surgical approach. The specialized techniques used in ethnic rhinoplasty at Dr. Ronald Gruber’s San Francisco Bay Area office are particularly popular with people of Asian, African, and Latin descent, but they may also offer advantages to members of other ethnic groups.

Ethnic Rhinoplasty Overview

Depending on the ethnicity of the patient, different techniques will be required in the performance of an ethnic rhinoplasty. For instance, those of Asian and African descent tend to have wider noses with less defined tips, and they may have thicker skin at the end of the nose that makes it more rounded. Thus, the ultimate goal of an ethnic rhinoplasty performed at our facility in Oakland, serving the San Francisco Bay Area and the surrounding region, is often to narrow the bridge of the nose, augment it somewhat in order to raise it, and add definition to the tip. Each procedure will differ based on the individual preferences of the patient.

If you would like to schedule a consultation for the ethnic rhinoplasty procedure, please contact Ronald Gruber, M.D. Dr. Gruber will explain all aspects of the surgery in detail with you, and he will also show you digital images of your potential nose job results based on photos of your current nose.

Ethnic Rhinoplasty Procedure

Just as in traditional rhinoplasty, the aim of ethnic rhinoplasty is to change the size and shape of the nose by altering the structure of the underlying bone and cartilage without causing breathing problems or external scarring. The basic procedure is the same: through incisions inside the nose, Dr. Gruber will manipulate and reshape the bone and cartilage. He will then close the incisions for healing.

Dr. Gruber uses certain techniques more commonly when performing an ethnic rhinoplasty. For instance, because many patients have a nose with a broader, flatter bridge, the bridge must be augmented with additional cartilage from elsewhere in the body. Artificial implants are also sometimes used.
